What If My Partner Doesn't Support My Pregnancy

Finding out you are pregnant can bring a wide range of emotions. If your partner is not supportive or is pressuring you to make a decision you are not comfortable with, you may feel hurt, confused, or completely alone.

First of all, please know this: your feelings are valid and you do not have to face this situation alone.

It is Normal to Feel Overwhelmed

An unexpected pregnancy affects both parents, but people often process difficult news differently. While some partners respond with love and encouragement, others may react with fear, anger, denial, or even silence.

Sometimes an unsupportive response comes from anxiety about finances, relationships, education, or the future. While those fears may explain their reaction, they do not excuse pressure, manipulation, or emotional abuse.

You Should Never Feel Pressured

No one should pressure you into making a pregnancy decision that goes against your values or what you believe is right. Whether that pressure comes from a partner, family member, or friend, it is important to remember that your voice matters.

Healthy relationships are built on respect, not coercion. Take time to gather accurate information, ask questions, and carefully consider your options.

Have an Honest Conversation

If it is safe to do so, try having an open and honest conversation with your partner. Fears and anxiety oftentimes decrease as people receive more information and begin to see practical ways forward.

You might ask questions like:

  • What are you most worried about?

  • How are you feeling right now?

  • What support do you need?

  • Can we learn more together before making any decisions?

Build a Support System

Even if your partner is not supportive, you do not have to carry this burden alone. Having someone who will listen without judgment can make a tremendous difference during this time of your life.

Consider reaching out to:

  • A trusted family member

  • A close friend

  • A pastor or church leader

  • A mentor

  • A pregnancy resource center

If You Feel Unsafe

If your partner is threatening you, controlling your decisions, isolating you from loved ones, or making you fear for your safety, take those concerns seriously. Reach out to someone you trust or a local organization that can help you create a plan to stay safe. You deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

There Is Hope

Many women have walked this road before you. Some partners who were initially unsupportive later became loving and involved fathers. However, some partners never changed, but those mothers still found the strength and support they needed to move forward.  Every story is different, but one truth remains; you are not alone.
